Agents of SHIELD Season 7 Will Be the Final Season - Comic Con 2019
Time to say goodbye to Coulson and the gang.
Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will end after its upcoming Season 7 on ABC, according to a report by Deadline and confirmed by the show’s official Twitter account.
“Next summer’s Season 7 will be the last for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Thanks to our fans for allowing us to be the longest-running Marvel TV series to-date,” the tweet said.
Agents of SHIELD is currently in its sixth season, and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb told Deadline that it actually ends “delightfully” but fans should steel themselves for Season 7 because now that the finish line is in sight, the showrunners have the freedom to make greater and more permanent storytelling decisions.
“When you know that’s what you’re doing, you can take greater risks, of life and death,” Loeb said. “Those kinds of decisions suddenly now are real on the table because you’re not playing how do we undo this when we get to the next season. You’re playing that this is going to be the end of the story.”
Loeb will be at Comic Con 2019 for the Agents of SHIELD panel in Hall H on Thursday, joined by cast members Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Henry Simmons, Natalia Cordova-Buckley and Jeff Ward and executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon and Jeff Bell.
Joeb shared with Deadline that they had thought Season 5 was going to be the last -- they even killed off Coulson and titled the season finale “The End” -- but then Marvel wanted more. Joeb and the showrunners took the opportunity to keep going, but on the condition that they would be able to bring the show to a proper, planned ending. But why?
“So we can actually build a season that will tie up any threads that are there,” Loeb explained. “To make sure that we come to a conclusion that’s satisfying to the fans, to the cast, to Marvel, and to ABC.”
