Dog Speedrunning MLB on Super Nintendo Is One of the Most Wholesome Things You'll See Today
Good boy!
A dog successfully completed a game of MLB on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball at a charity speedrunning event.
Games Done Quick hosted Peanut Butter the Shiba Inu at its Summer Games Done Quick 2024 event in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he raised money for Doctors Without Borders while playing the video game.
Peanut Butter, who's already an established speedunner, stepped up to the plate to play MLB, which basically involves pressing a single button. Prompted by his owner 'JSR' offering treats, Peanut Butter pressed his paw down on a big button to swing the bat.
An extra innings walk-off 2-run home run on the first pitch does it! PB gets the win (and is a very good boy!) #SGDQ2024 pic.twitter.com/qCnEjL8MwQ— Games Done Quick @ #SGDQ2024 (@GamesDoneQuick) July 5, 2024
He closed the game with a dramatic extra innings walk off two-run home run with a time of 29 minutes and 45 seconds. Cue delirium from the crowd and the proud owner of a very good boy.
IGN interviewed Peanut Butter and JSR earlier in 2024, and besides dealing with his "attention span of a three year old," training the Shiba to play games wasn't too complicated.
"I first had to train him to press the buttons on command, and that was easy," JSR said. "He's smart. He picked that up quick. But dogs have the attention span of a three-year-old, so it took about a year of constant daily training, every single day, with me using his food as collateral. And now he's pretty good. He can hold the button down for 20 or 30 seconds before he starts getting antsy."
Meanwhile, Games Done Quick reached a new milestone during Games Done Quick 2024: for the first time in Games Done Quick’s 14-year history, the speedrunning organization has raised a whopping lifetime total of $50 million, which was hit during the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice run by Mitchriz.
