Metroidvanias have become a staple within the indie game development scene, with new games remixing the genre constantly. While Southeast Asia is not known for its metroidvanias, IGN Southeast Asia has long said that Faerie Afterlight is the one to look forward to.

Video game publisher Mastiff has partnered with Indonesian developers Clay Game Studio to bring Faerie Afterlight to Steam in September 2023. Additionally, Faerie Afterlight is now also coming to the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch for a simultaneous September launch.

Clay Game Studio is a startup based in Malang, Indonesia, and Faerie Afterlight is their first Steam game. This small team is filled with people who love platformers; Clay Game Studio is just getting started and is excited to create more games.

Inspired by Indonesian philosophy and folk art, Faerie Afterlight is a beautifully stylised 2D metroidvania game featuring a story and world filled with heart, courage, and a sense of camaraderie. This is backed by a delightful soundtrack that perfectly complements the game.

Players will take simultaneous control of Kimo and Wispy as they venture deep into the world of Lumina. This involves going into infested caverns, exploring deep seas, and visitng ghostly cities to reclaim the scattered, broken shards of Light and bring balance back to the world.

Along the way, the pair will solve puzzles, befriend local inhabitants, engage enchanted enemies, and face off against fierce Titans to gain powerful new abilities that will grant them greater access to Lumina.

Players can use Wispy’s abilities to move platforms, walls, and even solve puzzles, while Kimo bounces and repels off each surface. Establish friendships with the natives of Lumina as well as some enemies too, if players keep an eye out for them.

Speaking of which, players will also have to comb every inch of Lumina for hidden doors, secret nooks, and covered passages. A major part of Faerie Afterlight’s charm is in unlocking every inch of this vast world’s forests, cerulean seas, and graceful ruins.

The main action-driven part of this otherwise serene game is the showdown with the corrupted Titans. This allows players to gain powerful new abilities and be granted access to new areas by clinging on to walls with the Spider’s Legs or dashing with the Beetle’s Horn.

Fans of Faerie Afterlight can now play the newly revamped PC demo available now on Steam and coming soon to Nintendo Switch.
