UMW Toyota Motor and Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia have announced their continued support for Malaysian motorsports for on-track and virtual racing activities with the announcement of the GR GT Cup Malaysia, an e-racing tournament utilising the PlayStation 5 racing simulator title, Gran Turismo 7.

UMW Toyota Motor President, Datuk Ravindran K. recently announced the launch and rebranding of the GR Velocity Esports Championship, now known as the Toyota Gazoo Racing (GR) GT Cup Malaysia.

The series, now in its sixth consecutive year, is one of the most lucrative online racing events in the country, offering up to RM90,500 in cash prizes this year, the highest ever in GR GT Cup Malaysia history.

“The momentum and the level of interest for virtual racing have grown tremendously and is a boost for both e-sports and motorsports here in Malaysia. We are proud to be able to support this platform of motor racing,” said Datuk Ravindran K.

For the first time this year, UMW Toyota Motor introduced the simulator racing experience at universities across Malaysia. These include stopovers at UNITAR, UiTM Pasir Gudang; UiTM Shah Alam; INTI Subang; Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia; Sunway University; and INTI Penang.

This is part of an important extension of Toyota’s mission to contribute to the growth of motorsports in Malaysia, particularly in the areas of developing a younger generation of talent. It is not only designed to encourage greater participation of youths but to also bring motorsports to the masses.

Ahead of the 2023 tournament, UMW Toyota Motor is inviting all aspiring e-racers to sign-up and have a go at the prize monies, besides being crowned Malaysia’s faster sim racer. The winner will also go on to represent Malaysia at the regional Toyota GR GT Cup Asia Pacific qualifier.

The qualifying stage for the tournament starts on July 15 to shortlist the top 40 fastest drivers for the quarter-final. Registrations for the qualifying stage are open now till July 21 on the official website.

Fans can catch all the exhilarating racing action of the semi-finals and the 10 finalists live at the Blue Concourse of Sunway Pyramid on August 19 and 20. UMW Toyota is partnering with leading video games retailer, Gamer’s Hideout, to offer a fun and exhilarating experience for all at the Grand Finals event with public time attack challenges and exclusive merchandise for grabs.
