DCEU producer Peter Safran has confirmed that James Gunn’s Suicide Squad film will be a “total reboot" called The Suicide Squad instead of Suicide Squad 2.

In an interview with JoBlo, Peter Safran, who acted as producer for Aquaman and the upcoming Shazam!, confirmed this information. When asked if fans should be excited for Suicide Squad 2, Safran said "First of all, we don’t call it Suicide Squad 2 ‘cause it’s a total reboot, so it’s The Suicide Squad and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot."

Elsewhere in the interview, Safran said of Gunn being set to work on The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was "all handled incredibly elegantly and everybody knows on both sides that Suicide Squad is the priority today and he’ll finish that movie and then everybody knows that his next film will be Guardians. It’s the best of all possible both worlds."

While rumors of both a reboot and title change have been floating around for some time, this is more solid confirmation that The Suicide Squad will in fact be a reboot of the original. Even with this change, Margot Robbie is rumored to return as Harley Quinn, and could possibly be joined by Idris Elba, who is reportedly in talks to replace Will Smith as Deadshot. A heavily-rumored Suicide Squad lineup for the film has also reportedly been leaked.

It was revealed last week that Gunn would be returning to the MCU to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 following his work with this upcoming DCEU film. In January, reports confirmed Gunn would both write and direct the new Suicide Squad film, and while he’ll definitely be tackling The Suicide Squad first, it appears many fans wish he'd start with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
