Wizards of the Coast has announced the release of March of the Machine, the latest set for the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering. Set to launch on April 21, March of the Machine is the final instalment in the four-part Phyrexian storyline, which sees players teaming up with legendary creatures and Planeswalkers from across the Multiverse to fight against the Phyrexian invasion.

The game's story revolves around Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines and leader of the Phyrexian army, who has set her sights on taking over the entire Multiverse. She expands her reach to other planes in an attempt to compleat all beings. The game's heroes, rallied by a heroic team of Planeswalkers, must team up to fight the Phyrexian scourge. The set features several new mechanics, the most exciting being the introduction of a new card type called Battles. When you play a Battle, you pick an opponent to protect it, and when they are defeated, they flip into a powerful new card for free.

In addition to Battles, March of the Machine also features a new creature-based mechanic called Backup, which allows players to add +1/+1 counters to creatures and gain additional abilities based on the creature giving the counter. Fans of the Phyrexian army will also get to play with Incubators - artifacts that enter with a number of +1/+1 counters and can be turned into creatures by paying two mana.

The set also introduces five new themes for Commander decks, including Phyrexian Cats, Zhalfir Knights, Shaman Creatures, Convoke Angels, and Gremlin Artifacts. Five new Jumpstart booster themes will also be introduced, including Brood, Overachiever, Expendable, Reinforcement, and Buff.

March of the Machine will feature the most showcase art styles to date, with all showcase frames from recent sets alongside several brand new frames representing additional planes. These showcase frames will primarily focus on Multiverse Legends - teams of Legendary creatures fighting against the Phyrexian invasion.

The set will be available in a variety of booster types, including Draft Boosters, Set Boosters, Collector Boosters, Jumpstart Boosters, Welcome Boosters, Commander decks, Bundles, and a Secret Lair. March of the Machine marks the first new card type since the debut of Planeswalkers in 2007, so players can expect an exciting new gameplay experience.
