One of the most unique horror games from the region is Malice, a cooperative puzzle game where two players are transported into a Japanese horror film. Those who enjoyed the game can now gear up for its sequel, Chiyo.

Malaysian developer Nimbus Games and publisher SCRYsoft have teamed up once again to bring more of its signature Japanese-inspired scares in Chiyo. Those who enjoyed Malice will be delighted to know that this game takes place in the same world as its predecessor.

In Chiyo, players assume the role of Idate Chiyo, a newly recruited paranormal investigator of the Tokugawa Shogunate's Magical Arcane Division. Chiyo is assigned with her first case to investigate the unknown.

This involves uncovering some strange occurrences that originate from an abandoned mansion in the forested interior of the small coastal city of Gotsu in Japan’s Shimane Prefecture.

Within the mansion, Chiyo encounters strange and malevolent spirits, devious contraptions and puzzles, and a dark family history that will threaten her survival. It is up to the player to find the root of this supernatural mystery and put an end to it.

Like Malice before it, Chiyo focuses on an escape room-based progression that uncovers the lore of the abandoned mansion. The player is tasked with solving puzzles in an immersive and atmospheric horror environment in Japan’s Edo era.

These puzzles are designed to challenge the player’s wits and nerves, so a calm mind might will help players see things through. What sets it apart from its predecessor is the inclusion of unique supernatural powers that allow players to pierce and dive into the paranormal realm.

So while the game’s creepy atmosphere is sure to raise goosebumps, players can also enjoy an engaging storyline, uncovering the mysteries of an abandoned mansion, a powerful family’s dark dealings and the consequences of love.

Nimbus Games have previously made a splash at Level Up KL, becoming the finalists for the SEA Game Awards 2021 and 2022. Chiyo ultimately won the Best Audio Design award at this year’s SEA Game Awards.
